The i.MX 8 Series: SOM Comparison

Madelyn Brown 04/19/2022

You’ve landed your eye on one of PHYTEC’s i.MX 8 NXP SOMs. Here’s a guide on the different applications and capabilities we had in mind when designing each of the i.MX 8 SOMs.

  • phyCORE-i.MX 8M Mini
  • phyCORE-i.MX 8M Nano
  • phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus
  • phyCORE-i.MX 8M
  • phyCORE-i.MX 8X
  • phyCORE-i.MX 8
Versatile module for a wide range of embedded applications

phyCORE-i.MX 8M Mini

Arm Cortex-A53/Arm Cortex-M4

The phyCORE-i.MX 8M Mini SOM is the perfect entry point given the balance between high performance and low power. Although compact in size, the SOM provides a generous 319-pin interconnect for interfaces. Designing in this SOM allows for scalability as your application evolves with support for drop-in i.MX 8M mini and i.MX 8M nano processor variants as well as density of onboard RAM and Flash.

Highlighted features:

  • I2C
  • SPI
  • MIPI CSI-2 camera
  • MIPI-DSI to LVDS converter
  • PCIe

Performance optimizing module perfect for voice recognition applications

phyCORE-i.MX 8M Nano

The phyCORE-i.MX 8M Nano SOM is pin compatible with the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Mini providing applications with the same 40 mm x 37 mm footprint. This SOM is a great fit for smart applications requiring voice recognition.

Highlighted features:

  • I2C
  • SPI
  • MIPI CSI-2 camera
  • MIPI-DSI to LVDS converter
  • PCIe
phyCORE®-i.MX 8M Mini

Edge computing module for accelerated machine learning applications

phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus

Arm Cortex-A53/Arm Cortex-M7

The phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus combined with on-chip machine learning accelerators provide a platform for your next-gen application. Meaning you can run your TensorFlow Lite model directly on the device independent of the processor cores. This SOM is also one of PHYTEC’s low power designs, a feature made possible due to the NXP 14LPC FinFET process technology at the applications processor. The low power design elements are continued on the SOM with selections such as LPDDR4 and use of the NXP codesigned PMIC.

Highlighted features:

  • Dual MIPI CSI-2 camera
  • USB 3.0
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet
  • PCIe
  • MIPI-DSI
  • LVDS
  • HDMI

Feature packed module scalable for all types of smart applications

phyCORE-i.MX 8M

Arm Cortex-A53 / Arm Cortex-M4

The phyCORE-i.MX 8M SOM is a feature packed all-in-one solution for multimedia smart applications that require audio, voice or video processing with the ability to support video playback up to 4k and video outputs up to 60 fps. The module has a BGA interconnect of 501-pins, on-board connectivity and passed intentional radiated emissions with pre-certified WiFi/Bluetooth interface making FCC/EMC testing a breeze for your project!

Highlighted features:

  • Dual PCIe
  • Dual USB 3.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Dual MIPI CSI-2 camera
  • MIPI-DSI
  • HDMI

Highly reliable module for industrial automation devices

phyCORE-i.MX 8X

Arm Cortex-A35/Arm Cortex-M4F

Replace multiple PCBAs with the quad Cortex-A53 cores on the phyCORE-i.MX 8X SOM. This featured packed module will speed up your development process with its Cortex-M4F core running RTOS. The phyCORE-i.MX 8X also features the additional 28nm FD-SOI technology which optimizes system performances (low leakage and power management). The final cherry on top, all-in-one solution for graphics, video, image processing, audio, and voice functions due to the NXP i.MX 8X GPU and Tensilica® HiFi 4 DSP. The phyCORE-i.MX 8X is expected to have continuous production until 2035+.

Highlighted features:

  • 4k video streaming
  • Dual display
  • Dual camera
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • PCIe
  • USB 3.0
  • 28 FD-SOI technology

High performance and feature packed module for advanced industrial control and complex embedded applications

phyCORE-i.MX 8

Cortex-A72/ Cortex-A53/Cortex-M4F

The phyCORE-i.MX 8 is a revolutionary SOM that offers consolidation of complex systems into one board saving on space and cost. A typical modern application can consist of a high-performance compute core to run an OS like Linux, a microcontroller to perform real time tasks and controls, as well as specific chips like DSPs and FPGAs. With Quad-core Cortex-A53 and Dual-core Cortex-A72, the phyCORE-i.MX 8 SOM has the capability to run two operating systems and replace two applications processor platforms.

Highlighted features:

  • Dual PCIe 3.0
  • USB 3.0
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Up to four display interfaces
